The Edge of Vision: CityLights
City Lights is a discrete portfolio within the Edge of Vision and maps my personal journey from near blindness to visual clarity (see CameraWork for more details). The images herein, all made in the camera, show a world just beyond sight using the methods of photography. CityLights, like CameraWork and LightWork, explores the tension between abstraction and representation, and between figure and gesture. In this respect, the pictures may best be understood as acts of experiential visual performance. They investigate motion and stasis, light and dark, and chance and design to consider how camera improvisation can produce bold and emotional pictures that challenge received wisdom about the nature of photographic practice and the act of perception. The content is drawn from light itself and the ways in which it is manifested in the world.
